Irena Sendler, Nobel Peace Price nominee, saved over 2,500 Jewish babies and children from the fate of most Warsaw Ghetto Jews
There recently was the death of a 98-year-old lady named Irena Sendler. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ulterior motive… She KNEW what the Nazi’s plans were for the Jews, (being German).
Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of her tool box she carried, and she also carried in the back of her truck a Burlap sack, (for larger kids). She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids/infants noises. During her time and course of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.
She was caught, and the Nazi’s broke both her legs and arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.
After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it, and reunited the family. Most, of course, had been gassed. Those kids she helped were placed into foster family homes or adopted. Last year Irena was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize….
She LOST. Al Gore won for doing a slide show on Global Warming.

thank god for people like irena…this woman was a true angel on earth. al gores winning of the prize over her is an eye opener about the wisdom of those selecting the winners and of those winning and not handing it over to someone like her after being selected.

Agreed. Wouldn’t you say they totally lost credibility when Yasir Arafat won their “prize”? It was over with for me at that moment. I lost interest.

Absolutely disgusting! They give the prize to a bag of wind talking about the climate change which we can do nothing about, instead of a woman who risked her life to selflessly save others? Whoever “they” are, they need to stop and take a long look at the decisions they make regarding who should get the “PEACE” prize. Who knows, maybe they’ll wise up and realize they made a huge frickin mistake and grant her the prize posthumously.

I find myself asking as I see the list of those who have won it why in the hell would anyone ever want to win such a thing and find themself in company with Yassir Arafat, Henry kissinger, Jimmy Carter, and Al Gore – just to name a few “winners”? Judge a man by the company he keeps. . . If ever nominated I think I would throw it back in their faces… Especially now after seeing how Al Gore was chosen over Irena. What a joke.

I just finished watching a Hallmark Movie about Irena Sandler. Her bravery, her commitment, her love for others, and being beaten almost to death – and that didn’t men squat compared to Al Gore’s hot air about nothing. It’s unbelievable. As far as I’m concerned, the Nobel Peace Prize means nothing now. Absolutely nothing.

I learned the story of Irena just today. What a beautiful, brave lady she was. May she rest in peace.
To think that Al Gore won the prize over Irena is almost impossible to believe. The committee that decides the winner should hang their heads in shame. What in the world were they thinking? They should hang their heads in shame. I totally agree with Dennis, Jeremy, and Jeneane.

The restriction not only concerns the nominees and nominators, but also investigations and opinions in the awarding of a prize. Nomination information older than fifty years is public. Hate to burst everyone’s bubble but the preceding information was taken from the official website of the Nobel Peace Prize. Undoubtedly Irena Sendler was a great and courageous woman, but the facts are that nominee’s names[unless they win] are not disclosed for fifty years after the nomination so although she may have been nominated there is no way to determine the truth of this rumor for 48 more years.

Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize, which in itself is a travesty. Irena Sendler should have won it many years ago. To compare the two people and what they have done in their lives, is ridiculous. Irena was a real hero, and she endured torture because of it. Al Gore said the ice is melting.
If, as Wendy Little said, this all might just be a ”rumor”, the fact remains that Al Gore won the Prize, and Irena never did.

There is no comparison between the two you are all correct however,Dennis you are wrong about global warming it is that attitude that we teach our children and then we won’t have to worry about prizes as there will be nothing left. Ms.Sendler did what she did because she was beautiful and it was the right thing to do, not for a prize. In fact her prize is surely with her now as well as the gratitude of all the lives she saved! If only today people would do the right thing for each other! She was always in danger and beat almost to death &she still did more under those circumstances then the people last night who watched a 15 year old get gang raped for over 2 hrs. Outside her.H.S in Richmond CA.after a dance while over 20 people took their phones and snapped pics instead of calling the police! I’m sure was no bodily harm to them. What a crime. Ms. Sendler is crying up there right now over that Not the Nobel peace prize!

Ms. Sendler is, and will always be, an astonishing example of how humans should act — towards everyone in this world. Unfortunatly, not many do. However, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to those people/organizations who do the most good for the most people. Global warming is exceedingly important (maybe not so much for those of us living today — but for our children and their children). The earth is not endless — it has limited resources and when those resources are being used up (as what global warming is an indicator of) then there not be human life on earth (and if there is it will be in a constant battle for resources and space and shelter).
Now, does Ms. Sendler deserve an award for what she did — absolutely. And there have been many recognitions given to her. As for the Nobel Peace Prize — the award is about scale. She helped 2500 people, whereas Global Warming research will help the world.

I just read Ellie’s comments regarding the Nobel Peace Prize.
When I read the comment that said the Prize was “about scale”, that Irena (only) saved 2,500 people, and that Global Warming would help the world, it almost made me ill. This dear, sweet, brave lady endured horrible tortures because she cared enough to save as many people as she could. Al Gore wrote a book. Big deal. Global Warming was a topic of discussions long before that. No one denies that all of us should care more about our planet. We should all recycle, and do all we can to make the world a better, cleaner place for everyone. That being said, the fact remains Irena was far more deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. It is unbelieveable that the Committee couldn’t see that.
I thought it odd that Ellie’s name is the first name of Ellie Wiesel. We all know who he is. I just wonder what his thoughts would be about all this?

I prefer the wisdom of the Sages of Israel.
Irena Sendler’s heroism was real. Any “heroism” by Al Gore is theoretical. And highly questionable at that. By that accounting, Irena Sendler saved 2500 worlds, whereas Al Gore has not saved a single one. In fact, according to what I’ve learned, he is actually endangering the freedom of many, which will in turn, endanger their lives.
