Holocaust Revisionists and Deniers

I had a visit from a Holocaust denier recently at my humble little blog. He posted a comment along with a link The Holocaust for Dummies.

I checked it out. One of the factoids presented was on the question of the authenticity of Anne Frank’s diary. Supposedly, it couldn’t be real, because the diary was written with a ball point pen, which was not invented in time for little Anne to use it to write up her experiences of being hidden in an attic in Amersterdam with her family for much of the war. A neighbor ratted them out and Anne was then sent to Westerbork transit camp, then to Auschwitz death camp, and ultimately she was murdered in the much more horrible (if you can imagine) death camp of Bergen-Belsen, shortly before liberation. Only her father Otto survived, found the diary in the attic and had it published.

Back to my Holocaust revisionist/denier visitor — I did some checking on one of the “factoids” which this person apparently believes, from the above cited link. Indeed, the ball point pen was not invented until 1945.

Score one for the Holocaust Revisionist/Denier.

The reason why a soul must be dismissive of the suffering of millions of Jews, Gypsies, Catholics and other innocents is the subject of another post. Or maybe I’ll leave it up to someone else who cares to wade through that dark world.

Anne Frank used a fountain pen. The first practical pen was patented in 1884.

at “The Fountain Pen Network” I found the following thread —

Anne Frank’s Pen – What Might it Have Been?

A Brief History of Writing Instruments

As Father Patrick Dubois, a Catholic priest who researches the Einstatzgruppen portion of the Holocaust says, there are no Holocaust deniers/revisionists in Eastern Europe. They know it happened.

Holocaust deniers/ revisionists are fond of wondering aloud, “Why are honest questions regarding the truth of the Holocaust always met with charges of antisemitism?” One response: Uncovering Certain Mischievous Questions About the Holocaust by Berel Lang. There many excellent articles on the topic of Holocaust denial/revisionism at the US Holocaust Memoria Museum website.

In response to my Holocaust revisionist/history buff type visitor, your credibility has just been shot down. On to better things for me.

A Poke in the Eye to Holocaust Deniers

According to Father Patrick Desbois, estimates of how many Jews were murdered during the Holocaust may have to be revised upwards by as much as 1.5 million more.

Audio: Subjugation – Now and Then (Second Half of Show) Cnaan Lipshitz talks with Yishai Fleisher about Father Patrick Dubois (sic), a Catholic clergyman who is uncovering the horrors of the Ukrainian and Polish role in the Holocaust. The first half covers how the Israeli government turns a blind eye to illegal Arab building, while watching, harassing and tearing down so-called “illegal” building by Jews, on JNF land.

Uncovering the Past by Marisa Buchanan, also covers the Ukranian massacres of Jews. Father Debois’ research is bringing new facts to the full light of day. The comments following this article are as interesting as the article itself as many survivors and children of survivors write a bit of their stories. There are titles to books, personal memoirs and links  as well.

Then, there is Father Desbois’ site, Memoir de Shoah. I put it in my blogroll, under Jewish History, since I anticipate reading the site thoroughly and referring to it in future posts.

Holocaust by Bullets is another link on the topic of the important work done by Father Desbois, published by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

For anyone who wants to assist Holocaust survivor’s directly, click Survivor Mitzvah, found in the comments at the MSNBC article.

A book recommendation within those same comments: The Unbearable Light of Being by Jonathan Safran Foer.

Einsatzgruppen murders are discussed extensively in Yaffa Eliach’s well researched book, There Once Was a World. I’m not completely clear on this, but I’m guessing the Einsatzgruppen murders are a distinct, though related subject,  since the research done by Father Desbois is considered cutting edge. His work currently centers in the Ukraine, but he hopes to continue this research in every country that was occupied by the Nazis during WWII. May HKB”H give him the strength.

Update 27 May 2009: I just read the front page of Father Desbois site Memoir de Shoah. He is researching the Einsatzgruppen murders.

Many people Father Desbois interviewed didn’t speak up until now, because they still live in daily fear of retribution by either the German or Russian government. As he has noted, the trauma of eithe participating or witnessing the horrid brutality of this part of the Holocaust has frozen many of these people in time. For them, the Holocaust never ended.

Another resource worth considering are the self-published memoirs of Lorissa Holt  entitled “I Remember . . . A Memoir of Nazi Invasion, Forced Exile and Concentration Camp.” They can be obtained by contacting garyerichardson@gmail.com.

The Huffington Post has a lengthy piece on the work of Father Desbois as well. Seems no one can make up their minds how his name is spelled.
