Anne Coulter’s actually quite historically sound in that oft-maligned statement — most of the indigenous peoples of the Levant, Mseopotamia, Egypt, Maghreb, and Anatolia were devout Christians — Nestorians, Maronites, and Copts, among other groups — who were massacred and pillaged and enslaved in the course of ghazwat during jihad al-talab wa’l-ibtida’ at the hands of the Arab mujahedin in the 7th and 8th centuries, and in the aftermath, once the remnants of kuffar were conquered subjugated, were forced to pay jizya (extortionate protection money, “in lieu of being slain” c.f. Arabic lexicographer E. W. Lane) and live in truly degrading APARTHEID status as dhimmis (from dhamma, meaning “to blame”). The humiliating and discriminatory legislation of the dhimma…

“[T]he dhimmi is obliged not to mention Allah or His Apostle…Jews, Christians, and Maji[a]ns must pay the jizya…on offering up the jizya, the dhimmi must hang his head while the official takes hold of his beard and hits [the dhimmi] on the protuberant bone beneath his ear [i.e. the mandible]…They are not permitted to ostentatiously display their wine or church bells…their houses may not be higher than the Muslim’s, no matter how low that is. The dhimmi may not ride an elegant horse or mule; he may ride a donkey only if the saddle is of wood. He may not walk on the good part of the road. They have to wear [an identifying] patch, even women, and even in the [public] baths…[dhimmis] must hold their tongue.”–al-Ghazali in Kitab al-Wagiz fi fiqh madhab al-imam al-Safi’i

…ultimately led many of the dhimmis to renounce Christianity (or Judaism, or Samaritanism, or Mandaeanism) in order to procure a degree of security, stability, and liberty, in order to render oneself immune from humiliation and insults procured while a dhimmi, and in order to obtain full citizenship and escape relentless persecution (although, at first, such muwalladun, or new converts, were still treated harshly — their descendants today, however, make up the majority of Muslims in the Near East, having been Arabized as well as Islamized, suggesting Islam as a vehicle for Arab supremacism and imperialism).

If one is truly intent on ending Imperialism, then one should logically be opposed to Arab-Islamic Imperialism in Berber Amazgha, in Coptic Egypt, black Sudan, Maronite Lebanon, Assyrian-Chaldean Iraq and Syria, Ma’dan southern Iraq, Kurdistan, Mandaean and Yazidi regions of Iraq, and yes — Jewish Israel and Judea and Samaritan Samaria.

I agree with you on nearly everything in your comments to this piece and enjoy your writing in general, finding it enlightening. (Sticking to mostly comments these days…we are pressed for time.)

I must, however, respectfully take issue with your characterizing the Shomron as “Samaritan”, which might sound like a separate people (besides Jews) are entitled to this part of Eretz Israel.

The Samaritans were a mixed group, resulting from the conquering and forced expulsion of the northern 10 tribes of Israel by Assyria. What then followed was the violent imposition on neighboring peoples to resettle the region. The Assyrians left a few of the poorer “Am HaAretz” in the Shomron in order to maintain some continuity in farming, and other agrarian pursuits (tax revenue probably). The consequent religious syncretism and mixing of these peoples produced the community which we know historically as the Samaritans, who then were at odds with the remaining tribes of Israel in Judea.

All that is left today is the tribe of Judah (Jews), some Benjamites, and some from the priestly tribe of Levi, as well as a few others from the northern tribes who remained faithful to Rehoboam when the nation tragically split upon the death of King Solomon. This split greatly weakened both kingdoms, which offered the Assyrians the opportunity to conquer the northern Kingdom (Israel). During the Assyrian onslaught a few from the ten northern tribes again ran south to the kingdom of Judah seeking refuge and have thus been absorbed into the one of three remaining recognizable tribes (very few know that they are Benjamites these days, and many know they are from the tribe of Levi.)

There are very, very few Samaritan families remaining.

O.E., “inhabitant of Samaria,” a district of Palestine, from L.L. Samaritanus, from Gk. Samareia “Samaria,” from Aramaic Shamerayin, ult. from Heb. Shomeron, town named for Shemer, owner of the hill on which it was built (cf. I Kings xvi:24).

      From: Online Etymological Dictionary

The land, properly called the Shomron, reverts back to sovereignty under what remains of the children of Israel (Jews). We have never, ever relinquished our claim, evidenced by our thrice daily prayers, etc. I am not suggesting you implied otherwise, but felt this point was in need of clarification.

As I’m sure you are aware, the same gnarly etymological problems surround the term “palestine” and “palestinian”. These words have been separated from historical reality, co-opted by our enemies, and politicized, in the service of delegitimizing our rightful claims on our stolen homeland. We can’t base historical claims of sovereignty on the vicissitudes of etymological developments alone. They are keys to historical events, nothing more.

Again, with all due respect, please take this in the spirit in which it is intended, one anti-jihadi and potential friend, to another, and both friends of Avid.

My purpose in adding to your comment is merely to head off some deranged anti-Jew (Shai Ben Tekoa’s term) visiting and then claiming we have to give back the Shomron to the 3 remaining (???) descendant “Samaritan” families which resulted from the atrocities committed by the Assyrians…

These days, with hatred of Jews dramatically on the rise, and the very pro-active, hypocritical, deceptive efforts to delegitimize our claims to our historic homeland at full throttle, one never knows…

I thought you’d agree. We are on the same page. I only went to the trouble for the sake of those who may not have studied the history as thoroughly as you or I. I’m no scholar, just deeply interested. It’s easy for folks with a very hectic life to be taken in by the liars of the day.

Whatcha think of buzzard Northstar? He’s entertaining, eh? I’ve met very few intelligent antisemites. They’re mostly drones…

He’s a yawner. Not worth any additional thought. Some people are just impervious to reason. Once he gets his wish — Jewish genocide, at the hands of his beloved Muslimin and Muslimat — he and his kind are next.

G-d forbid he should get his wish. I think his type are in for a nasty surprise. We’ve already suffered enough.

He just hung himself with his own big mouth, admitted he’s all for the genocide of Jewish babies, toddlers and schoolchildren. Anything happens anywhere, chas v’ shalom, I hope the FBI is on his front doorstep within the hour.
