THIS DAY February 21

February 21,1543 - Battle of Wayna Daga – A combined army of Ethiopian and Portuguese troops defeated a Muslim army led by Ahmed Gragn. The battle occurred east of Lake Tana.
Led by the Emperor Galawdewos, the combined army of Ethiopian and Portuguese troops defeated the Muslim army led by Imam Ahmad ibn Ibrihim al-Ghazi. Tradition states that Ahmad was killed by a Portuguese musketeer, who had charged alone into the Muslim lines. Once his soldiers learned of the Imam’s death, they fled the battlefield.
February 21,1912 - Ioannina is incorporated into the Greek state after the Balkan Wars.
February 21,1965 – Malcolm X is assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City by members of the Nation of Islam.
Tensions increased between Malcolm and the Nation of Islam. It was alleged that orders were given by leaders of the Nation of Islam to “destroy” Malcolm; in The Autobiography of Malcolm X, he says that as early as 1963, a member of the Seventh Temple confessed to him having received orders from the Nation of Islam to kill him.
On March 20, 1964, Life published a photograph of Malcolm holding an M1 Carbine and pulling back the curtains to peer out of the window of his family’s home. The photo was taken in connection with Malcolm’s declaration that he would defend himself from the daily death threats which he and his family were receiving. Undercover FBI informants warned officials that he had been marked for assassination.
In June 1964, the NOI sued to reclaim Malcolm’s home in Queens, which they claimed belonged to the organization. The suit was successful, and Malcolm and his family were ordered to vacate the house. On February 14, 1965, the night before a scheduled hearing to postpone the eviction date, the house burned to the ground. Malcolm and his family survived, and no one was charged with any crime.
On February 21, 1965 in Manhattan’s Audubon Ballroom, Malcolm had just begun delivering a speech when a disturbance broke out in the crowd of 400. A man yelled, “Get your hand outta my pocket! Don’t be messin’ with my pockets!” As Malcolm and his bodyguards moved to quiet the disturbance, a man rushed forward and shot Malcolm in the chest with a sawed-off shotgun. Two other men charged the stage and fired handguns at Malcolm, who was shot 16 times. Angry onlookers in the crowd caught and beat the assassins as they attempted to flee the ballroom. Malcolm was pronounced dead on arrival at New York’s Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
Two suspects were named by witnesses — Norman 3X Butler and Thomas 15X Johnson, both members of the Nation of Islam.
Three men were eventually charged in the case. Talmadge Hayer, also a Black Muslim, confessed to having fired shots into Malcolm’s body, but he testified that Butler and Johnson were not present and were not involved in the shooting. All three were convicted.
February 21, 1968: In Israel, Palestinian terrorists associated with al-Fatah, a vocalized acronym meaning “the conquest” in Arabic, used a crude bomb to damage a pipeline in the vicinity of Neot Hakkikar, south of the Dead Sea.
February 21, 1968: Fatah terrorists in Israel fired five mortar shells into the Israeli commune at the base of Masada in the south end of the Jordan Valley. There were no injuries but the target was symbolic. Masada was where a small contingent of Jews had held out against the onslaught of the Roman Legion in 70 CE after the sacking of Jerusalem.
February 21, 1969: Palestinian Muslims associated with Yasser Arafat’s Fatah murdered two Jews in a central Jerusalem supermarket. Eight Israeli civilians were wounded in the assault
.February 21, 1970: On the same day that the PFLP-General Command destroyed a Swiss aircraft, killing everyone aboard, the main branch of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine exploded a bomb aboard an Austrian Airlines Caravelle flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Vienna, Austria. Fortunately, the damage was not catastrophic and the plane returned to Frankfurt safely with its 33 passengers.
The bomb was detonated twenty minutes after take off by an altimeter reading of fourteen thousand feet. It had been placed in a mailbag intended to be carried on a flight to Israel later in the day. The premature blast inside the cargo hold created a jagged three foot by two foot hole through the bottom of the fuselage.
February 21, 1981: A bomb exploded in the Munich headquarters of American Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, wounding eight people, three seriously. Two different groups claimed responsibility: Commando of Croatian Revolutionaries in Europe and Armed Secret Organization-Execution Group. The CCRE conveyed their malfeasance through letters written in Croatian, and the ASO-EG communicated with the press in a letter written in Polish.
Either way, it was further proof that America was not justified in going to war in the Balkans on behalf of the Croats. They had been Fascist terrorists in league with the Nazis and Muslims from their inception. The Croat Ustashi had slaughtered 800,000 Christian Serbs and Jews and yet these ruthless Roman Catholics were presented as the victims of terror by an ignorant and immoral cadre of American media outlets and politicians. Clinton’s NATO bombing campaign of Serbian Christians in the midst of the Monica Lewinski affair was morally bankrupt.
February 21, 1988: A bomb exploded in front of the Ivory Coast’s ambassador’s residence in Lebanon. It represented the third attack against the embassy in a month.
February 21 1991: In Guatemala, a group calling itself the “Islamic Brotherhood” claimed responsibility for detonating a massive bomb in front of the British Embassy. These same jihadists were engaged in shooting and bomb attacks on the Uruguayan and Canadian Embassies, as well as the US-affiliated Covenant House.
Guatemala saw a substantial increase in terrorist activities after coalition forces invaded Iraq. Since there was no known Muslim population in Guatemala, it is likely that Islamic Brotherhood was affiliated with a Marxist terrorist group.
February 21, 1991: Islamic arsonists set fire to a car deployed by the Egyptian Embassy in Amman, Jordan.
February 21, 1993: In Switzerland, a bioengineering plant in Zurich was bombed by an Iranian terrorist gang calling itself the “Group of Martyrs Representing Mostafa Sadeki and Ali Zadeh. The Muslims said that the plant had provided supplies of biological weapons to Iran. And since America had given Saddam Hussein his stash of chemical and biological weapons, it’s hard to point a condemning finger at the Swiss without several pointing back as US.
The Group of Martyrs Representing Mostafa Sadeki and Ali Zadeh claimed responsibility for several raids on a Swiss bio-chemical plant during this time. The firm, Bioengineering AG in Zurich, had been accused (hypocritically) by government officials in the United States and Israel of providing lethal agents to Iran which were used to produce biological weapons. Equipment destroyed in the bombings included fermenters that were similar to those used in bio-weapons programs.
Suggesting that fundamentalist Islam makes Muslims incompetent, many claim that the Iranian Shia group was not responsible for these raids, and that Israeli intelligence was actually behind the attacks. They say that since bombings were carried out in both Switzerland and Germany, and with extreme precision and sophistication, Islamic terrorists could not have planned or executed them.
February 21, 1994: In Algeria, a French citizen living in Algiers was murdered in his bookstore by Armed Islamic Group gunmen.
February 21, 1999: The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan joined forces with the Islamic Movement of Turkestan to bomb a market in Tashkent, killing 12. The IMU and IMT would go on to kidnap several U.S. civilians.

Like many other children, Ala‘ witnessed conflict between rebel groups and the Janjaweed. This drawing depicts a rebel soldier first shot in the arm, then executed by gunshots to the groin. Ali, a teacher in a refugee camp, said the rebels are killed this way to emasculate them. “They [the Janjaweed] know what they are doing,” he said. “They are doing it with purpose.”
“In the afternoon we returned from school and saw the planes. We were all looking, not imagining about bombing. Then they began the bombing. The first bomb [landed] in our garden, then four bombs at once in the garden. The bombs killed six people, including a young boy, a boy carried by his mother, and a girl. In another place in the garden a women was carrying her baby son—she was killed, not him. Now my nights are hard because I feel frightened. We became homeless. I cannot forget the bad images of the burning houses and fleeing at night because our village was burned…”
